How to teach your child maths at home? Tips for parents

Your child has problems with maths and you do not know how to help? Here are practical tips that really work: without being an expert.

A parent sitting with a child over a maths task is a scene familiar in most Polish homes. Unfortunately it often ends in frustration on both sides.

Why can helping at home be hard?

Your way of solving maths tasks may differ from the one the school teaches. When you explain “your way”, the child is confused: and hears from the tutor that they are “doing it wrong”. The effect is worse than no help.

What really helps?

**Ask, do not explain.** Instead of “you do it like this here”, ask: “What do you already know about this task? What is given? What do we have to calculate?”. A child thinks more deeply when they look for the answer themselves.

**Small sessions, every day.** 15 minutes every day is more effective than 2 hours on Friday before a test. Maths requires regularity.

**Do not judge mistakes emotionally.** “How can you not know this?!” is a sentence that builds a maths block for years. A mistake is information, not a verdict.

**Do not do it for the child.** Even if they start crying that they “cannot do it”. Help them take the first step, not the whole task.

When is it worth hiring a tutor?

When you see that your help does not improve results: or that maths sessions end in an argument. An outside tutor is emotionally neutral, which often makes a huge difference.
