This is one of the most common questions from parents of matura candidates. The answer depends on the subject, the student’s current level and the number of extended subjects.
The general rule: the earlier, the better
Ideal matura preparation starts in grade 11 (the former second year of high school), 12–18 months before the exam. That is the time for calmly filling gaps, steady study and several rounds of revision.
When you absolutely must not wait any longer
If a student has gaps from primary school or the first years of high school, every month of delay increases the range of material to catch up on. For hard subjects (extended maths, physics, chemistry) we recommend starting at the latest in November of grade 11.
When can you start later?
A student without major gaps who only wants to “polish the details” before the English or Polish matura can start intensive tutoring in February–March of the matura year. But note, 3 months is too little to learn from scratch.
Signs that it is time to act
- Grades are falling in the middle of the semester
- The student “does not understand” whole topics, not just individual tasks
- The first mock matura ended with a result below 40%
How to start?
The first tutoring lesson is usually a diagnosis: the tutor checks the level and sets a plan. Contact several tutors, compare the approach and choose the one with whom the student “clicks”.
