Programming for children: from when is it worth starting, and how?

Coding is a skill of the future. When is a child ready for the first programming lessons and what should you choose to start with?

5 min read ·

“My child is interested in computers, maybe it is worth signing them up for programming?” is a question more and more parents ask themselves from the first grade.

From when can you start?

The first algorithmic concepts (a sequence, a loop, a condition) can be introduced to children as young as 5–6: through play, without code. From 8–9 years old most children are ready for a simple visual environment (Scratch). From 12 you can start real text-based programming.

What to choose to start with?

Scratch is the best first environment for children aged 8–12: visual drag-and-drop, instant effects. Python is the natural step for 12+: readable syntax, huge possibilities, required at the matura.

How to check whether a child has a “knack” for programming?

There is no such thing as a “knack for programming”. Programming is a craft, not a talent. What matters: logical thinking (chess, puzzles), patience with debugging and curiosity about “why does this work”.

A tutor vs a group course

A group course gives structure and a community. A tutor adapts the pace and helps the child carry out projects that really interest them: for example their own game, animation or app. That often decides long-term motivation.
